Gerður Helgadóttir (1928-75) was a versatile and a prolific artist. She studied in the Art and Crafts College of Iceland and continued her education in Florence and then Paris.

Since Gerðarsafn opened in 1994, many exhibitions of the artis's works have been held there, including retrospectives. In conjuncion with one such show in 2005, an international conference on glass art, Iceland 2005, was held. Such events have contributed to making Gerður Helgadóttir´s art better known, and Gerðarsafn hopes that the publication of Gerður. Sculptor and Glass Artist will cast yet more light on the works of Gerður, who was indisputably one of the leaders of Icelandic art in the twentieth century.
