Gerðarsafn- Kópavogur Art Museum invites artists to apply for participation in the group exhibition SCULPTURE/SCULPTURE during the fall of 2018.

SCULPTURE / SCULPTURE is a series of exhibitions now being held for the third time in Gerðarsafn from August 24th- October 7th, 2018. This year a group exhibition, showcasing works by contemporary artists, is set to explore the place of sculpture as a medium, not only as an important part of art history but as a living visual language in contemporary art. Gerðarsafn invites artists to embark upon a dialogue between the medium and history on his/her own terms. Artists are encouraged to contemplate the broad definition of the concept and the various representations of sculpture in contemporary art. Traditional three dimensional pieces as well as work that further expands the definition and medium will be accepted, such as two dimensional pieces, installations, video, sound and/or live performances.

The SCULPTURE / SCULPTURE series seeks to honor sculptor Gerður Helgadóttir (1928-1975), who the museum is named by, and her contribution to Icelandic art as well as to give insight into the medium in contemporary times. The title of the exhibition series refers to the exhibition Sculpture/sculpture/sculpture, held in 1994 at Kjarvalsstaðir (now Reykjavík Art Museum) with works by 27 Icelandic sculptors. The exhibition opened the same year as Gerðarsafn opened its doors to visitors.

An exhibition committee will review applications and selects works in a dialogue with the artists. A total of 8-10 artists, living and working in or in relations to Iceland, will be invited to participate in the exhibition. Gerðarsafn will pay an artist fee to participating artists. The committee includes the museum´s director, artistic board and curator.
